Timed Traffic Lights, New Ramps to Ease Congestion in King of Prussia
King of Prussia, PA (August 2, 2011) -- Adaptive traffic signals along DeKalb Pike (Rt. 202) and new ramps on Henderson Road connecting to I-76 will ease traffic congestion and improve traffic flow on two of King of Prussia’s major roadways.
Upper Merion Township is scheduled to begin updating eight intersections along 1.8 miles of DeKalb Pike (Rt. 202) between Long Road and Jughandle Road with adaptive traffic signals by fall 2011. The timed traffic signals will help to maximize traffic flow by adjusting the signal times to reflect changing traffic conditions.
“The adaptive control system utilizes video detection to measure the volume and delay of traffic on each intersection and determines the appropriate signal rotation and flow,” said Charles DeVitis, Upper Merion Township Traffic Signal Division Supervisior. “This will minimize overall delays at the intersections and, hopefully, create a safer driving environment.”
In April 2010, Upper Merion Township’s Traffic Division, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and Rhythm Engineering installed adaptive traffic signal control equipment at two of the most congested intersections in front of the King of Prussia Mall on DeKalb Pike (Rt. 202) in order to gauge the benefits of adaptive control versus normal time-of-day closed loop operation.

“The goals of the traffic signal upgrades on DeKalb Pike are to decrease time travel and traffic delays by at least 50% and decrease the number of reportable crashes by 20%,” said Ron Wagenmann, Upper Merion Township Manager and KOP-BID Board Member.
The Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) grant awarded to Upper Merion Township in April 2011 provided the funding for this project.
Other projects in King of Prussia include the construction of new ramps to connect westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) with Henderson Road and South Gulph Road. Construction on the $10.5 million project began Dec. 1, 2009, and is expected to be completed in fall 2011. The new ramps will provide easier access for travel between westbound I-76 and Henderson Road and South Gulph Road. The ramps will also provide motorists with another option to reach Upper Merion besides using the existing Gulph Mills and DeKalb Pike (Rt. 202) interchanges with I-76.
Upper Merion Township is also working with Boles, Smyth Associates, Inc. to complete the design for a project that will widen Henderson Road between Queens Drive and Saulin Boulevard. Henderson Road will be widened to five lanes, two northbound, two southbound and a common center turn lane. Construction should begin in spring 2012, and the project is scheduled for completion by fall 2012.
New exit ramps from the PA Turnpike to North Gulph Road were completed in the spring of 2011 in anticipation of The Village at Valley Forge development project.
